ACADEMIC FREEDOM AND TENURE (at least 7 faculty, 2 P&A, 2 graduate students) : Responsible for all matters of policy related to academic freedom and faculty tenure, including the Regents' policy, Faculty Tenure. The committee does not deal with individual disputes. The committee meets from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. one Friday per month.
ALL-UNIVERSITY HONORS (3 students, no more than 8 faculty, 2 P&A, 2 civil service, 5 alumni) : Solicits, screens, and recommends candidates for University honors and approves names for building dedications. There is a significant amount of reading required before each meeting. The committee meets from 12:00-1:30 p.m. four Wednesdays per year.
CONFLICT RESOLUTION ADVISORY COMMITTEE (1 student, 2 faculty, 1 P&A, 1 civil service, 2 administrators) : Advises the President on the operation of the Office of Conflict Resolution and the performance of the Director. This committee meets once per semester.
CONFLICT RESOLUTION HEARING OFFICER ROSTER (4 faculty, 4 P&A, 4 civil service) : Serves as the pool of hearing officers who able to chair employment grievance hearing panels.
CONFLICT RESOLUTION PANELIST ROSTER (4 faculty, 4 P&A, 4 civil service) : Serves as a board of peer representatives able to serve on employment grievance hearing panels.
DISABILITIES ISSUES (4 students, at least 7 faculty, 2 P&A, 2 civil service) : Establishes procedural and policy guidelines for physical access, academic programs, and services for the disabled. Monitors and assists in their implementation. People with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply. The committee meets from 10:00-11:30 a.m. three Wednesdays per semester.
EDUCATIONAL POLICY (6 students, 12 faculty/P&A) : Makes recommendations concerning educational policy (e.g. grading, distance education, calendars, instruction, classrooms). The committee meets from 2:00-4:00 p.m. one Wednesday per month and often requires about 30 minutes of advance reading per meeting.
EQUITY, ACCESS, AND DIVERSITY (at least 7 faculty, 2 P&A; 2 civil service; 6 students) : Provides for consultative participation on the full breadth of diversity and equal opportunity issues affecting faculty, students, and staff at the University of Minnesota. The committee meets from 2:30-4:00 p.m. three Mondays per semester.
FACULTY AFFAIRS ( at least 10 faculty, 2 P&A, 1 undergrad student, 1 graduate assistant, 1 postdoc fellow/associate) : Discusses issues affecting the professional and personal welfare of the faculty including such matters as tenure, working conditions, health benefits, and retirement. Recommends changes in procedure and policy to the Faculty Senate. The committee meets from 3:15-5:15 p.m. one Tuesday per month and often requires about an hour of advance reading per meeting.
FINANCE AND PLANNING (4 students, 10 faculty, 2 P&A, 2 civil service) : Serves as a consulting body to the administration on budget, space, and planning issues, including the biennial budget and capital requests. The committee meets from 3:15-5:15 p.m. every other Tuesday and often requires one hour of advance reading per meeting.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES (3 students, 8 faculty, 4 P&A, 1 civil service) : Makes recommendations concerning University computing, telecommunications, and information systems. The committee meets from 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. three Tuesdays per semester.
JUDICIAL (at least 15 faculty) : Serves as the central judiciary body responsible for hearing cases involving denial of tenure and/or promotion and termination for cause. Panel members are required to attend 2 - 4 meetings per case. The committee meets from 3:00-5:00 p.m. one Thursday per month.
LIBRARY (4 students, 12 faculty/P&A, 1 civil service) : Discusses library administration issues such as acquisitions, accessibility, and electronic services. The committee meets from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. three Wednesdays per semester.
RESEARCH (3 students, 15 faculty, 2 P&A, 1 civil service, 1 postdoc fellow/associate) : Recommends policies dealing with research at the University, such as grants management, intellectual property, and funding issues. The committee meets from 2:00-4:00 p.m. one Monday per month and requires about an hour of advanced reading per meeting.
SOCIAL CONCERNS (7 students, 7 faculty, 3 P&A, 3 alumni, 3 civil service) : Advises the administration on how it should respond to social problems, such as divestitures and relations with other businesses. It is concerned with the relationship between the University and the community as a whole. The committee meets from 12:30-2:00 p.m. three Mondays per semester.
STUDENT ACADEMIC INTEGRITY (5 students, 5 faculty, 3 P&A): Advises the Senior Vice President and Provost and the administrative officers responsible for education, outreach, and sanctions related to issues of student academic integrity. The committee meets from 9:30-11:00 a.m. three Wednesdays per semester.
STUDENT AFFAIRS (12 students, 6 faculty/P&A, 1 alumni, 1 civil service) : Advises the administration on admission, registration, student health care, and student organization issues. The committee meets from 2:30-4:00 p.m. three Wednesdays per semester.
COUNCIL ON LIBERAL EDUCATION (2 undergraduates, at least 10 faculty, 1 P&A) : Responsible for implementing and maintaining the undergraduate liberal education (LE) curriculum. During this academic year, the CLE's primary tasks will be: 1) Ongoing review of courses being proposed by departments for the LE requirements, 2) Assessment of courses that have been approved for a LE requirement to ensure they are continuing to meet the requirement, and 3) Discussion and assessment of the criteria used to review courses for the LE requirements. The CLE meets monthly for two hours, with approximately an hour and a half to two hours of preparation time before each meeting. Course proposals need to be reviewed before each meeting so members are prepared to discuss and vote on the proposals at the meeting.
FACULTY ACADEMIC OVERSIGHT FOR INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS COMMITTEE (8 faculty, 2 faculty reps) : Responsible for eligibility, compliance, and other issues relating to academic integrity of participants in athletics. Committee works closely with the Provost, who is in charge of academic counseling programs for athletes.
INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS COMMITTEE (2 students, 2 student athletes, 8 faculty, 2 P&A, 2 faculty reps, 2 alumni, 1 civil service) : Provides consultation and advice to the President, the senior administrator responsible for athletics, and the departments of intercollegiate athletics on policies and other major decisions.
STUDENT BEHAVIOR (at least 10 students, at least 12 faculty/P&A) : Acts as a hearing panel when students contest alleged violations of the Student Conduct Code. Members must become familiar with the University's Student Conduct Code and general hearing procedures. Members are likely to attend 1-2 hearings a semester, some of which can last several hours. Mandatory orientation sessions each fall.
ACADEMIC HEALTH CENTER FACULTY
CONSULTATIVE (8 faculty; with
at least one from each college/school within the
AHC) : Serves as the executive committee of the AHC Faculty Assembly and the consulting body to the VP for the Academic Health Center. The committee meets for two hours twice a month.
ACADEMIC HEALTH CENTER STUDENT
CONSULTATIVE COMMITTEE (15 students; with
at least one from each college/allied health program within the
AHC) : Provides a link between students and administration, as well as
between the various colleges within the AHC. Discusses
student services, classroom renovations, and the
legislative request as they relate to the AHC. The committee meets
from 5:00-6:00 p.m. one Wednesday per month.
