B. FACULTY ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON THE HEALTH SCIENCES (FACHS)

The Faculty Advisory Committee on the Health Sciences is concerned with all matters relevant to Health Sciences and not solely the individual institutes, colleges, schools, or departments within the University of Minnesota.

Membership

The Faculty Advisory Committee on Health Sciences shall be composed of 10 voting faculty members made up of tenured/tenure track faculty, fixed-term/contract faculty, and P&A qualified academic staff with primary teaching and/or research responsibilities.  The majority of committee members shall be tenured/tenure track faculty.

  • One member from each of the following schools/colleges/programs:                                                                                                                    
    • Medical School (Basic Sciences)
    • Medical School (Clinical Sciences)
    • School of Dentistry
    • School of Nursing
    • College of Pharmacy
    • School of Public Health
    • College of Veterinary Medicine
    • Center for Allied Health Programs
    • Either the Medical School or the College of Pharmacy, Duluth Campus
    • Center for Learning Innovation, Rochester Campus   
  • Non-voting ex officio representation as specified by vote of the Faculty Senate 

Members shall be appointed or elected by the faculty governance committees of the respective schools, colleges, or the center listed above. The process shall be managed by the University Senate Office. As specified in Article IV, section 1 of the University Senate Rules, ex officio administrative members shall be appointed from each of the following offices to serve on the Faculty Advisory Committee on the Health Sciences, and shall have the authority to designate someone to attend meetings in their place:

  • Associate vice president for academic health sciences (appointed by the Office of the Associate Vice President for Academic Health Sciences)
  • Associate vice president for clinical affairs (appointed by the Office of Academic Clinical Affairs)

In case of an interim vacancy, the chair of the Faculty Advisory Committee on the Health Sciences will contact the respective chair of the appropriate faculty governance committee, to fill the vacancy. The Faculty Advisory Committee on the Health Sciences shall elect its chair from amongst its members for a one-year term of office. The chair must be a tenured faculty member and shall be eligible for re-election to that position for up to three consecutive years.

Duties and Responsibilities

a. To meet at least monthly during the academic year to discuss matters of concern to the Health Sciences faculty.

b. To communicate with the chairs of the faculty governance committees of the Health Sciences schools, colleges, and/or other units as appropriate. 

c. The chair shall meet each semester with the chair of the Health Sciences Student Consultative Committee to discuss issues of mutual concern to both faculty and students, and the two committees shall meet jointly as deemed necessary by the chairs. 

d. To consult with and advise the senior administrative officer in the Office of the Associate Vice President for Academic Health Sciences whose responsibilities include the integration of all health-related programs in schools and colleges throughout the University of Minnesota. 

e. To consult with and advise the senior administrative officer in the Office of Academic Clinical Affairs whose responsibilities include increasing support for interprofessional education and the advancement of interprofessional care and training.

f. To meet annually with the executive vice president and provost.

g. To meet annually with the vice president for research.

h. To consider and respond to any proposed/planned action taken that may impact the faculties of the Health Sciences by the Board of Regents, the central administration, or by another individual or body having any relationship with the University.

i. To recommend to the Faculty Consultative Committee such actions or policies as it deems appropriate.
