Committee Charge

The Term Faculty and Academic Professionals Subcommittee (TFAPS) is concerned with matters related to term faculty and academic professionals, including, but not limited to, the review of and advocacy for policies, practices, and procedures that impact them. TFAPS reports to the Senate Committee on Faculty Affairs (SCFA). 

Membership

TFAPS shall be composed of:

  • 1  contract faculty representative appointed by SCFA
  • 1  tenure system faculty representative, preferably with experience in hiring or supervising term faculty - appointed by SCFA
  • 1  faculty representative, preferably with experience working closely with term faculty in clinical settings - appointed by the Faculty Advisory Committee on the Health Sciences (FACHS) 
  • 3 P&A representatives, preferably with some system campus representation - appointed by the P&A Consultative Committee (PACC)
  • 1 P&A representative appointed by the Academic Freedom and Tenure Committee (AF&T) 
  • 1 graduate assistant appointed by the Student Committee on Committees - preferably with teaching assistant experience of at least 2 semesters 
  • 1 undergraduate student appointed by the Student Senate Committee on Committees
  • 1 postdoctoral fellow or associate appointed by the Postdoctoral Association

Members shall be appointed by the University Senate governance committees listed above. In the initial year, SCFA will appoint a chair. Except for the initial year, the subcommittee shall elect its chair from among its members for a one-year term of office. The chair is eligible for re-election to that position. The membership appointment process shall be managed by the University Senate Office. 

Ex officio administrative members shall be appointed from each of the following offices to serve on TFAPS, and shall have the authority to designate someone to attend meetings in their place:

  • 1 representative from the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs (appointed by the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost)
  • 1 department chair or unit administrator (recommended by the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost and approved by the SCFA chair)
  • 1 representative from the Office of Human Resources (appointed by the Vice President for Human Resources and Chief Human Resources Officer)

Duties and Responsibilities

  • To evaluate and consult on matters of concern to term faculty and academic professionals, including but not limited to: hiring; evaluation, promotion, and retention; academic freedom; professional development; employment conditions and benefits; equitable representation in governance; and academic innovation, recognition, and awards.
  • To review and recommend changes to University administrative policies, procedures, and practices that impact the professional and personal welfare of term faculty and academic professionals.
  • To collaborate on common issues with AF&T, FACHS, PACC, and SCFA.
  • To recommend to SCFA such actions or policies as it deems appropriate.
