The Campus Safety Committee meets Mondays from 2:30-4:00 p.m. unless otherwise noted. University Senate Governance senates and committees will continue meeting via Zoom during fall semester 2021 and spring semester 2022.

CAMPUS SAFETY COMMITTEE

The Campus Safety Committee will advise and consult with the President, the responsible senior administrators, and the Vice President for University Services on policies and major decisions relating to campus and public safety at the University. 

Regents policy delegates immediate administration of Public Safety and University Health & Safety to the President, the central administration, the Senior Vice President for Finance and Operations, and various University officers across the System; this committee has no direct role in the day-to-day management of the departments.

The Campus Safety Committee shall be composed of: 

  • 6 faculty members, 
  • 2 academic professional members, 
  • 10 student members (including one from each system campus; of the six Twin Cities representatives, two shall be graduate students, two shall be professional students and two shall be undergraduate students),
  • 2 civil service members, and
  • ex officio representation as specified by vote of the University Senate.

The chair, faculty, academic professional members, and civil service shall be appointed by the Senate Committee on Committees. The student members shall be appointed by the Student Committee on Committees.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. To advise the Senior Vice President for Finance and Operations and appropriate senior University officers across the system regarding policies and major decisions relating to their programs and operations related to campus safety.

  2. To consult with and advise units responsible for campus and public safety on the issues they have and the actions they take, including, but not limited to, data-driven reviews of organizational performance, metrics for internal reviews of individual performance, training for new employees, development training and certification opportunities for current employees, and the possible creation of new positions to improve campus safety in targeted ways.

  3. To consult with and advise regarding the finances of units responsible for campus and public safety.

  4. To consult with and advise units responsible for campus and public safety on equipment and its use on campus. 

  5. To recommend to the Senate Consultative Committee or to other Senate committees such actions or policies as it deems appropriate.

  6. To take up other matters as shall be referred to the committee by the Senate Consultative Committee or other Senate committees.

  7. To consult with other pertinent stakeholders, both internal and external to the University, as needed.

  8. To participate, either representative(s) or the full committee, in searches for chiefs of police across the system, the director of University Security, Public Safety, University Health & Safety and the Vice President for University Services, and in searches for other major positions related to campus and public safety, and in any periodic comprehensive performance review of these positions, paying particular attention to the qualifications of candidates in the areas of cultural sensitivity and compliance.
